Sad news emerged on Tuesday, April 17 that former First Lady Barbara Bush had passed away after suffering from several illnesses. The 92-year-old was suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure.

After her death, honoring tributes came rushing in from people around the nation. People talked about Barbara’s strong faith, her consistent support of her husband and children, and her role as “The Enforcer.”

After the news was released, all eyes were on George H.W. Bush, who was married to Barbara for 73 years. The couple met when they were only 17 and 18 and have stood by each other’s side since.

People around the nation also became emotional when they heard about the way that George H.W. Bush spent his last day with Barbara. According to his former chief of staff, he never left his wife’s side the entire day and held her hand throughout.

Before the funeral, George H.W. Bush released a statement about his wife’s passing.

He said, “I always knew Barbara was the most beloved woman in the world, and in fact, I used to tease her that I had a complex about that fact. But the truth is the outpouring of love and friendship being directed at The Enforcer is lifting us all up. We have faith she is in heaven, and we know life will go on- as she would have it. So cross the Bushes off your worry list.”
