Rainier Beach Yoga in Seattle, Washington runs a class exclusively for people of color. The class was formed recently and meets once a month.
According to Mynorthwest.com, the exclusive class was started by five people who wanted to carve out a space for people of color whom might otherwise feel uncomfortable. An email for the class states that it is for people of all sexualities, ages, genders, and races. Except for people that are Caucasian. The email states that “white friends, allies and partners are respectfully asked not to attend”.
KIRO radio host, Dori Monson, asked what would happen if a white person were to show up and want to take part in that class. Class co-founder, Teresa Wang said that “It’s a class for people of color, so he would be coming to that class knowing that we’re really clear about who we are asking to come to class, so I’m not really sure because it hasn’t happened to us.”
Let that sink in for a second. Imagine for a second if this studio advertised a class for white people only. The studio would be vilified in the media across the country. However, I can almost guarantee that this story will not see the light of day in the mainstream media.
This class is clearly promoting racism by promoting the exclusion of a specific group of people. It also exposes a deep hypocrisy in this country.
What comes to mind are the small Christian businesses throughout the country that are being fined, vilified, and subject to hate for refusing to participate in same-sex marriage ceremonies.
What do you think? Is there an underlying hypocrisy in this country? Do you think businesses should be able to exclude people based on their preferences?
