A school in Mississippi is making national headlines. Davis IB Elementary School resides in Jackson, Mississippi. Big changes are in the future for the school and for the students who attend it.

Recently, they decided to rename their school. It will now be named after former President Barack Obama. The name change will take effect in the next school year.

"Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him," the school’s PTA president said in a statement, according to The Clarion-Ledger, a local paper.

The effort to change the name has been a long process. Parents tried to get it changed because they felt it honored the Confederate President and did not accurately represent America and the diversity of today.

The school’s PTA president said the name change will now “reflect a person who fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves.”
