Update: It has been reported that one student and one adult chaperone are dead after the collision this morning.
Reports are claiming that a full-size school bus filled with children collided with a dump truck on a New Jersey highway. The crash occurred on Thursday, thereby leaving the bus partly demolished and on the side of the median. Several people have injuries — many of them are possibly children, and some of the injuries may be life-threatening.
According to NBC New York, an unknown number of children were on board the school bus at the time of the 10:20 am Route 80 westbound crash near exit 25 in Stanhope.
The media has not yet been made aware of additional details on the children or the nature of their injuries. Several of the children have been transported to a local medical center, while others have been brought to a local hospital.
Photos reveal a large, damaged bus on its side in the median, surrounded by emergency and law enforcement vehicles. The front of the bus is barely recognizable. ABC calls it "a mangled chunk of broken-apart machinery spread from the highway shoulder lane through the median." Photos also show several people being treated for injuries.
Currently, Route 80 is totally closed in both directions. CNN claims that the crash has been described as "horrific" and that ejections seen during the crash.
"A horrific scene," said Greenbaum, the Mount Olive Mayor Robert Greenbaum.
