Scalise in Trouble

U.S. Representative Steve Scalise was readmitted to an intensive care unit Wednesday due to concerns of infection. His condition was downgraded from “fair” to “serious,” according to CNN News

Originally, he was release from the intensive care unit on June 22 after undergoing multiple surgeries, which followed his injury from the attack by a lone gunman during a congressional baseball practice on June 14, of which he and several other Republican congressmen partook.

“He remains in serious condition,” read the statement from MedStar Washington Hospital Center Thursday evening. “We will provide updates as appropriate.”

Scalise was injured from a single gunshot wound to the hip, which “traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding,” a MedStar statement said in June and released by Scalise’s office.

“He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding. He has received multiple units of blood transfusion. His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations,” said the initial MedStar report from June 14.

Scalise serves as the House majority whip, the third highest ranking congressman in the House. He is widely known as a diehard baseball fan, and a staunch conservative who has advocated for fiscal conservativism and a strong military, as well as a voice against Planned Parenthood, according to CNN News
