Sports fans around the U.S. are cheering for joy on Friday after the U.S. Olympic Committee’s latest announcement. They have revealed that they are putting a U.S. city in the bid for another Winter Games.

According to reports, the United States Olympics Committee decided to choose Salt Lake City, Utah as their bid for the Winter Olympics, most likely contending for 2030. A U.S. city has not hosted an Olympic Games since 2002, though Los Angeles will be hosting the Summer Games in 2028.

The press release said, “Today, the United States Olympic Committee named Salt Lake City as the candidate city for a future Winter Olympic and Paralympic bid. The selection, announced at the USOC Board meeting, means Salt Lake City will be the United States contender in a future international bid process.”

They continued, “The USOC has not indicated for which future Winter Games they would put forth a bid, though the next open bid will be for the 2030 Games, with a selection to be made by the International Olympic Committee no later than 2023. Salt Lake City was selected over Denver which was the only other US city competing for the right to bid after Reno-Tahoe ended their process earlier this year.”

According to reports, Denver officials had received major backlash after becoming a finalist city. However, Salt Lake City has had no vocal opposition up to this point. Mayor Jackie Biskupski estimated that the Games would cost around $1.3 billion.

Utah Sports Commission President Jeff Robbins said, “We have an airport being renovated, light rail, all the great venues from 2002 along with a lot of major renovation. We wouldn’t have to build much. They would have had to build a significant amount of infrastructure and winter venues to host the games again. We feel we’re still ready, willing, and able to host the games, again.”

Utah Gov. Gary R. Herbert said, “On behalf of the State of Utah and our citizens, we appreciate the United States Olympics Committee’s confidence in our ability to host a future Olympic Winter Games.”
