A recall involving a massive amount of eggs has worsened, according to federal health officials.
Illnesses across several states have been reported, dozens more than when the initial recall was issued last month, according to Fox 61.
The outbreak is linked to Rose Acre Farms, located in Indiana, which recalled almost 207 million eggs due to a potential contamination with Salmonella Braenderup. Since CNN reported the story on April 15 – at that time 22 illnesses were reported – that number has increased to 35. At least 11 people have been hospitalized due to complications surrounding the outbreak, although no deaths have been reported.
The eggs were sold through retail stores and restaurants in the following states: Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
“Consumers with these eggs shouldn’t eat them,” FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a tweet. “Throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for credit or refund.”
Some of the brands affected by the recall include Country Daybreak, Coburn Farms, Crystal Farms, Sunshine Farms and Glenview. Some of those eggs were sold at Food Lion stores.
Salmonella can cause serious illness, sometimes leading to death – especially in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems, according to CNN.
The disease is oftentimes contracted through contaminated poultry, meat, eggs and water, affecting the intestinal tract. Symptoms include fever, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Salmonella can oftentimes be passed from the hen to her egg because the egg passes through the same canal in which the hen defecates, but bacteria in the hen’s ovary or oviduct can also get into the egg before the shell forms around it, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
