Olympic swimmers are some of the most well-known athletes on Team USA. Michael Phelps truly brought swimming to center stage in recent years by delivering performances of a lifetime and setting numerous world records.
Another great swimmer to grace the pool with Phelps is Ryan Lochte. However, unlike Phelps, Ryan seems to constantly be finding himself in hot water (pun intended). Now, he has just received some brutal news.
"The longtime U.S. swimming star has been banned from competition until July 2019, which means the 12-time Olympic medalist cannot compete as planned in the national championships that start this week in California. Lochte will also be ineligible for other top meets, including the Pan Pacific Championships later this year and next year's world championships," reported ESPN.
The suspension comes after Ryan received an intravenous injection in May. The method is usually banned under the drug rules that surround the sport. While the drug he was being injected with is legal, receiving it via an IV is not.
"Lochte's violation essentially came to light when he posted the photo of him getting the IV on his social media accounts. That triggered the USADA investigation, one that Lochte "fully cooperated" with according to U.S. officials," reported ESPN.
Locate has since responded to the news. He is also said to be holding a press conference soon.
"I have never taken a prohibitive substance," Lochte said. "I have never attempted to gain any advantage by putting anything illegal in my body. I would never do that; this is very serious to me. ... Unfortunately, while the rule is a newer rule and is not widely known as others, I should know better," he said.
