Royal Family Announces the Name of Prince William and Duchess Kate's New Baby

On Monday, April 23, Prince William and Duchess Kate welcomed their third child, a little prince. He was born at 11:01 a.m. local time.

Royals fans have been patiently waiting to find out the young child's name. Now, the wait is over! The palace announced his name on Friday, April 27.

Meet Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge! Louis was the first name of Lord Mountbatten—the uncle of George's great-grandfather Prince Philip and mentor to Prince Charles. Louis is also included in his older brother's name.

He joins older siblings Prince George Alexander Louis and Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

Prince George was named after Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI, who reigned from 1936 until his death in 1952, according to CNN. It's also a name that has patriotic and religious significance for people in England. Saint George is the patron saint of England because of his legendary defeat of a dragon in the third century.

Alexander, which means "defender of men," is a name that appears regularly in the Dutch royal family.

Princess Charlotte, on the other hand, appears to be named after Prince William's father, Prince Charles. Charlotte is the feminine form of Charles. According to CNN, it's also Pippa Middleton's middle name.

"Charlotte has not been used by a member of the royal family in over two hundred years, and so chances are the couple chose it more for its familial significance than the history it evokes, but its history is an interesting one," added CNN.

Elizabeth was expected as a middle name given that it's the name of both William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and his great-grandmother. It's also the middle name of Kate and her mother Carole, as well as being the first name of Kate's maternal great-grandmother and her great-great-grandmother.

The final middle name, Diana, is the most personal of the names. Of course, it's after Prince William's mother the late Princess Diana.

The proud parents stepped out of the hospital to show off their youngest child. Kate looks fantastic, especially for having just given birth.

News broke early Monday morning that Kate Middleton was in labor, and she had been admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital in London. She was in the Lindo Wing of the hospital—the same wing where she gave birth to Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

A large Union Flag has been raised over Buckingham Palace and a State Standard over Windsor Castle. These are meant to mark the birth of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's third child.

According to their statement, the baby boy was born at 1101 hrs and weighed 8 lbs, 7 oz.

The child will become fifth in line to the throne, moving Prince Harry to the sixth spot. In line before him are his two siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, his father, Prince William, and the next in line to the throne, Prince Charles.

Congratulations to the couple on their new baby! See all the photos of William and Kate leaving the hospital for the first time.
