Richard Branson Shares the Devastating Effects of Irma on His Private Island

British billionaire Richard Branson is just one of the many affected by the devastating Hurricane Irma. After the storm ripped through the Caribbean last week, his private island was not spared from the destructive path.

Branson had publicly shared his plans to wait out the storm in his wine cellar at his home on Necker Island while the storm passed through the British Virgin Islands. After experiencing three hurricanes in years past, he decided to stay at his home which was equipped to withstand high winds.

Branson and some of his staff members hunkered down in his cellar while the storm passed. Following the storm, they emerged to a devastating scene. Branson’s private island, which he has owned for 30 years, had been severely damaged.

“I have never seen anything like this hurricane,” Branson said. “Necker and the whole are have been completely and utterly devastated. We are still assessing the damage, but whole houses and trees have disappeared.”

Even with the damage to his own island, Branson is doing his part to shift the focus on the victims of the hurricane. He shared on social media how he headed to Puerto Rico to aid those who had been left in devastation in the wake of Irma.

“This story is about the tens of thousands of people who have lost their homes and their livelihoods. We have spent the past two days visiting team members who live on Virgin Gorda and as many people as possible, distributing aid, water, and supplies,” Branson wrote in an Instagram post.
