NFL linebacker for the Miami Dolphins, 30-year-old Rey Maualuga, was arrested on battery charges early Saturday morning. He reportedly became physically violent after being confronted about an unpaid tab at a local club; he refused to pay before attacking the staff member.
According to TMZ, the incident occurred in Miami, Florida—city of his NFL team. Unfortunately, the Dolphins won’t be his team for long.
NBC Sports reported that the Dolphins released Maualuga in response to the recent arrest. If he is not claimed, he will be a free agent.
Before the arrest, he had a very promising professional football career. He was a second-round draft pick in 2009, spending a successful eight years with the Cincinnati, Bengals.
Additionally, he was beginning to expand his role on the field with the Dolphins, but that is no longer a possibility, given the circumstances. The Dolphins released a statement, confirming that his slot will be replaced by De’Veon Smith (in a different position).
This is not the first time he has been in trouble with the law. TMZ also noted that he pled guilty to drunk driving a few years ago in 2010.
Off the field, Maualuga is a father. The NFL player is also very outspoken about his faith. His social media profile states, “Only God can judge me With God everything is possible.”
Maualuga, or one of his representatives, has not yet issued a statement regarding this incident as of early Saturday afternoon.
