Three U.S. Congressmen Arrested Outside Trump Tower

Three U.S. congressmen have been arrested outside New York City’s Trump Tower on Tuesday. A City Council speaker was also arrested.

The New York Daily News says Reps. Adriano Espaillat (D-Manhattan), Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), and Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), along with City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, were taking part in a protest against President Trump’s DACA plan.

Even though the president is working with Democrats on a plan to give legal status to illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, the politicians were rallying against provisions in Trump’s plan to boost border security, according to ABC-affiliate WCVB.

"We don't want families to be divided. Trump's policy goes against what the majority of this nation supports and believes in. It goes against our values,” Mark-Viverito explained.

The police got involved, though, when Espaillat, Gutierrez, Grijalva, Mark-Viverito, and six other people decided to sit down in the middle of Fifth Avenue, blocking traffic. According to Latin worker advocacy group Make the Road New York, all ten people were arrested.

Before the arrests, the NYPD gave them a warning through a loudspeaker, letting them know that, "Since you have refused to leave the roadway, you will be placed under arrest on the charge of disorderly conduct.”

The arrest of Grijalva was reported on his Twitter account:
