Recently, news emerged that three American citizens were going to be released from North Korea after having been detained there. Kim Hak-song, Kim Sang Du, and Kim Dong Chul began making their way back to the United States on May 9 after a year in North Korea.
The White House made a statement about the release on Thursday.
The statement reads, “At the direction of President Donald J. Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other representatives of the United States government travel to Pyongyang, North Korea on May 9 to prepare for the President’s upcoming meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.”
It continued, “During Secretary Pompeo’s visit, the North Korean leadership released three American detainees. President Trump appreciates leader Kim Jong Un’s actions to release these American citizens, and views this as a positive gesture of goodwill.”
“The three Americans appear to be in good condition and were all able to walk on the plane without assistance. All Americans look forward to welcoming them home and seeing them reunited with their loved ones,” it concluded.
President Trump revealed that he would be meeting the three American citizens at the airport upon their arrival, taking place early Friday morning.
