On Friday, November 2, the sad news was confirmed that “the real Super Mario” has passed away.  Mario Segale, the man who inspired the video game character Super Mario, passed away at the age of 84.

According to BBC, Segale was an Italian-American from Washington state. He was an extremely successful property developer.

In the 1980s, Segale leased one of his warehouses to Nintendo of America. Later, the organization decided that they wanted to name the star of their video game after Mario Segale. Thus, Super Mario was born.

The character had previously been called Jumpman, but Nintendo decided that they wanted to give him a real name. Segale joked that he was “still waiting for [his] royalty checks.”

According to reports, Segale “always ducked the notoriety and wanted to be known instead for what he accomplished in his life.”

Though he was modest about the fact that his name was used, he inadvertently brought joy and fun to millions of people around the world. In fact, the Mario series is known as one of the most successful video games franchises of all time.

One fan wrote, “RIP Mario Segale- the real-life namesake for Mario. Thank you for indirectly providing us with one of the world’s most iconic characters.”

Mario Segale is survived by his wife, Donna, four children, and nine grandchildren. Please be praying for them during this time. Share your prayers here! In other recent news, two are severely injured after a stabbing incident in the workplace. Please be praying for them as well.
