Things Looking Grim for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; First Absence in 2.5 Decades

January 07, 2019Jan 07, 2019

On Monday, January 7, Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had a first in her career. She was absent for oral arguments, making it the first absence she has had during her decades in the highest court.

The 85-year-old underwent surgery on December 21. According to reports, doctors had discovered two cancerous growths on her left lung. The growths were discovered after she went to the doctors after falling. Thankfully, the growths were discovered in time to be surgically removed.

Five days after her surgery, the “Notorious RBG” was released from the hospital. However,  she has been in a state of recovery ever since.

According to USA Today, Chief Justice John Roberts talked about RBG’s absence at the beginning of the session on Monday. He said that she would be “unable to be present today but will participate.”

While many reports are confirming that Justice Ginsburg’s absence is not a sign that her health is failing further, others noted that it is extremely rare of her, under any circumstances, to miss a day at the court.

According to reports, RBG was still present after two previous battles with cancer, both in 1999 and 2009. Additionally, Ginsburg was present the day after her husband’s death in 2010.

Following her surgery, doctors confirmed that there are no remnants of disease on Ginsburg’s lung or anywhere else on her body.

Ginsburg was the second woman ever to be appointed to the United States Supreme Court. She was appointed in 1993. The first woman to be appointed was Sandra Day O’Connor in 1981.

Ginsburg has publicly stated that she intends on remaining on the Court for the next several years.

We will continue to update if more information is released regarding Ginsburg’s health. In other recent news, a type of Ibuprofen has just been recalled. If you have young children, make sure you are aware of this!
