Royal titles are a hot topic. WIth Camila Parker BowlesPeople are eager to find out what other royals could get their names changed, as Queen Consort is officially announced. Princess CharlotteBowles could be crowned queen, a rare title.
A New Princess Royal?
The title princess-royal was first created in 1641. King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria tried to replicate the French tradition of giving the eldest daughter a stylized title. Princess Mary was made the princess royal. Only seven women have held this title in the nearly 400 years that have passed since then.
The title is so rare because it’s not doled out automatically. It’s also given for life, so it sticks with a princess even if the reigning monarch dies. This was the case with Queen Elizabeth II. King George could not grant her the title princess royal before she became queen because Princess Mary, his sister, was still alive and held the title. This title has been traditionally held by the monarch’s oldest daughter. It was more than 20 years after Mary’s death in 1965 that Elizabeth bestowed this honor on her only child. In 1987, Anne was crowned princess royal.
What is required?
Six-year-old Charlotte, the eldest child of a presumptive monarch could be the next princess royal. Prince Charles did not have any daughters so Anne is the only one who could get in his way. Anne could die before William becomes King, which is not what anyone wants. William would then be free to christen his princess royal daughter. Given the history of the couple, it is not surprising that they are so close.
This thought is worth contemplating: She would be the eighth person to hold this title in almost 400 years. It’s rare that many things only occur twice a year. It’s like the Halley’s Comet of royal titles. This is the royal family. William can technically change his name whenever he likes. Given his love of tradition, however, it’s unlikely you’d suddenly see, say, Lilibet Diana named princess royal.
Title Stories Abound
The topic of royal titles was rarely discussed. Then Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and other royals moved to America and tabloids suddenly became experts on ancient royal prerogatives. Gossip CopMany stories about the Sussexes losing title have been discredited by the author. It’s even become a conservative flashpoint, with some American politicians demanding the duo lose their designations.
Questions have risen about Prince Andrew’s royal titles as well. Settling a Jeffrey Epstein-related pedophilia lawsuit led to him being stripped of his military titles, but he probably won’t lose much more than that. Titles, like everything in the royal family are a complex mess of rules and traditions.
