Pittsburgh rapper Jimmy Wopo was shot dead in a drive-by in his hometown of Pittsburgh Monday afternoon. He was only 21 years old.
According to Time, two men were rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds – one of them Wopo, the other a secondary target. That man is reportedly in stable condition, authorities said. Wopo’s manager, Taylor Maglin, confirmed that Wopo had died.
Jimmy Wopo is the celebrity nom de plum for Travon Smart. The young artist was on the verge of breaking it big with multiple videos on YouTube that surpassed 1 million views, according to Fox News. One of his most popular songs was "Elm Street."
“I lost my brother today and it’s the worst feeling in the world,” said Maglin. “He was destined for greatness.”
“He wanted the best for his friends, family and community,” Maglin added. “We lost a great person today, but just know that I will do everything in my power to make his memory live on forever. Love you bro.”
His death comes on the same day that another young rapper was shot in Florida outside a motorcycle dealership. XXXTentacion was only 20 years old.
According to Fox News, Wopo had been shot twice in the past. Only moments before the shooting, Owen Seman, Wopo’s attorney, had spoken to the young rapper about a contract with a major label.
