Freshman Democratic representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has had an inflammatory week. First, she caused uproar in the Democratic and Republican parties with comments that were widely viewed as anti-Semitic. Now, she's attacking former President Obama, reported Fox News.
In a new interview, she called the 44th president's message of "hope and change" a "mirage." She also attacked him on his usage of drones and his border detention policies.
The Minnesota representative said that Obama and the Democratic Party have been “perpetuating the status quo.” She shared her polarizing opinions in an interview with Politico.
“Recalling the ‘caging of kids’ at the U.S.-Mexico border and the ‘droning of countries around the world’ on Obama’s watch," Omar charged that Obama "operated within the same fundamentally broken framework as his Republican successor,” according to the Politico article.
Omar said, “We can’t be only upset with Trump… His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was."
She continued, appearing to take a direct shot at Obama, "And that’s not what we should be looking for anymore. We don’t want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile.”
While not all Democrats get along, it's unusual for a Democrat to attack Obama. This is especially true for a junior rep. who has only been in the house for two months.
