Renowned theologian, pastor, and author R.C. Sproul has just passed away. He was 78.
The news has just been reported by his organization, Liogonier Ministries. According to their blog, Sproul was hospitalized on Dec. 3. Since then, his condition had not improved, and he’d been hooked up to a ventilator.
“The doctors believe this is not pneumonia, but an exacerbation of his emphysema due to the flu,” the blog reported, later adding that he’d been battling fluid in his lungs and a fever due to an infection.
Another posting on Tuesday described his treatment as “an hour-by-hour with many techniques being used to adjust sedation levels and improve respiratory function.”
Sproul held numerous seminary degrees, has been known as a reformed Presbyterian apologist, and was a council member of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. He’s written over 90 books, has spoken around the world, and has been heard on the “Renewing Your Mind with Dr. R.C. Sproul” radio program, according to his organization’s website.
Sproul has also been known for his ardent defense of Calvinism and emphasis on holiness. He suffered a stroke in 2015 but quickly recovered.
His son, theologian R.C. Sproul Jr., made national headlines the last couple years after first getting caught up in the data breach scandal involving adultery matchmaking website Ashley Madison, according to Christianity Today, before getting arrested for drunk driving, according to Christian Post. His son resigned from his dad's organization.
During Sproul Sr.’s ongoing health battle, supporters said, “We are waiting on the Lord and asking you to continue in prayer for Dr. Sproul and his family.”
Please pray for his loved ones as they deal with the loss! In other news, a firefighter has lost his life battling the California wildfires, which are still burning out of control.
