The National Football League has been in the midst of a major controversy in recent days regarding hundreds of players protesting during the national anthem. Although the protesting began with former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016 as a way to protest police brutality and racial inequality, the kneeling has become another anti-Trump movement.
After President Trump suggested that all professional football players who kneel during the anthem should be fired with a controversial statement, the number of participants to take a knee during the “Star Spangled Banner” drastically increased. In one of his rally speeches to Trump supporters, Trump commented, "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say 'get that [SOB] off the field right now; he's fired’."
Trump was immediately under fire by the Left, but the majority of Republicans understood his brutally honest remark, given that they also feel these players are indeed disrespecting the American flag and those who put their heart and soul into serving our country. Several celebrities weighed in with their opinions—actress Queen Latifah was among those who slammed Trump for his comment against NFL players.
Latifah has starred in a number of movies and television series including “Hairspray,” “The Perfect Holiday,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Valentine’s Day,” and “Girls Trip.” Most recently, she’s a part of the main cast for the new TV series, “Star.”
Throughout her career in the spotlight, she has won and been nominated for a variety of awards including Teen Choice Awards, BET Awards, and Golden Globe Awards. In addition to acting, she also spent some time of her career being involved in music.
On Thursday, Latifah told People she was upset about the president’s response, “Of course I’m upset, but I’m not upset over everything that’s happening in terms of who decides to do what — whether you kneel, take a knee or lock arms — I’m upset that the president of the United States used that language.”
During her interview, she admit that she took offense to his NFL comment and has taken offense to some of his other comments in the past. In her opinion, President Trump should apologize for the way he communicated his thoughts.
She stated, “I think he owes an apology to Colin Kaerpernick’s mother and any other woman who’s had to hear him say that. He should apologize to even the people who support him because he’s the president — he should not use such vulgar language. I don’t care if you’re kinda whipping up the crowd and cheering them, it’s just classless.”
The actress continued, “It’s tacky and it’s not something the president of this country should be doing. He’s supposed to be the leader, not a follower, and that’s just kinda like go with the crowd kinda thing...You get slapped over using those words you know, normally — if somebody said that to him or someone he cared about then he would take high offensive to it so he shouldn’t be able to use that towards somebody else.”
Queen Latifah isn’t the only celebrity who publicly took a stance against President Donald Trump. Stars from “Grey’s Anatomy,” actress Olivia Wilde, author J.K. Rowling, actor Samuel L. Jackson, and many others have expressed their support of the #TakeAKnee movement.
