President Donald Trump is making waves with his historic summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. He's reached an agreement with the leader that works toward de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
For that, the 45th President of the United States has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. According to Fortune, Trump was nominated by a Republican congressional group and by two members of Norway's governing Progress Party, which advocates for limited immigration and lower taxes.
“What’s going on now is historic,” Progress Party member Per-Willy Amundsen told NRK. “A process is underway to ensure world peace in the future. It’s a fragile process, but we must of course do what we can to help this process bring good results.”
Unfortunately, President Trump likely won't be eligible for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2018. The deadline for this year's prize passed in January, so this nomination will make him eligible for 2019. It's unclear whether he was nominated for this year's award by other leaders.
This is one of the world's most coveted awards. Lawmakers, academics, and researchers from around the world can be nominated and receive the award. The Nobel Committee in Oslo typically receives hundreds of nominations each year. In the past, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro were nominated.
"A record 330 people were nominated this year," said Forbes.
Former President Barak Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. He won it for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”
In an interview with "Fox and Friends," White House counselor Kellyanne Conway commented on President Trump's chances of winning a Nobel Peace Prize. She contrasted his potential award with former President Obama's win.
She remarked, "The last president was handed the Nobel Peace Prize. This president is actually going to earn it.”
Others echo Conway's comments. One Twitter user wrote, "President Obama was handed a Nobel Peace Prize. President Trump has EARNED IT."
Conservative commentator Britt McHenry added, "Going to be pretty comical watching the liberal media meltdown over Norwegian lawmakers nominating President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize...."
