Many Christians have wondered if one of the reasons God has blessed America so much is because she stands up for Israel. Whether or not that is the case, President Trump gave Israel a huge gift when he officially declared that their biggest ally recognizes Jerusalem as their capital and will be moving the U.S. embassy there.
This declaration hasn’t gone over well with Palestinians who have claimed that the Holy Land is theirs. Demonstrations, riots, and rocket attacks followed.
Many other nations also responded negatively toward Trump’s move with 128 countries denouncing him during a United Nations vote, according to CNN. Aside from Israel, only a few Pacific Island nations, Guatemala, and the Hondorus sided with Trump. 35 countries — many of them in South and Central America — refused to vote either way. Many countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and elsewhere voted against Trump.
In response, Trump threatened to withhold from those dissenting countries the massive amount of aid that the U.S. gives them each year, according to the UK’s The Guardian.
“We’ll save a lot. We don’t care,” Trump declared. “But this isn’t like it used to be where they could vote against you and then you pay them hundreds of millions of dollars. We’re not going to be taken advantage of any longer.”
Then on Tuesday the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley extended a hand to the countries that voted against Trump’s Jerusalem resolution, according to The Daily Caller.
“As I said in December, we won’t forget the Jerusalem vote. To that end, tomorrow night, we are having a reception for the countries who chose not to oppose the U.S. position. This is a great sign of U.S. friendship, and I look forward to tomorrow evening. We hope to see more of this in 2018,” she said. “The United States is asked to do a huge amount around the world, and we are happy to do that. But we expect to be treated respectfully in return.”
Later on Tuesday, Trump responded on Twitter with a direct threat toward the Palestinians.
“It's not only Pakistan that we pay billions of dollars to for nothing, but also many other countries, and others. As an example, we pay the Palestinians HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect. They don’t even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel. We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more. But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?” Trump wrote.
Some conservatives were quick to cheer Trump’s latest tweet.
