In an interview on Thursday morning with "Fox and Friends," President Trump revealed why he thinks Kanye West has decided to openly support him.
"I get along with Kanye," Trump explained, hinting at the reason why many people might suspect the famous rapper is supporting the current president. "I get along with a lot of people, frankly."
President Trump and Kanye West have long had a close personal relationship. On several instances, Ivanka Trump has taken to Twitter to praise the rapper for his music, and Trump himself has often expressed a personal liking for the rapper.
"He has said very nice things about me in the past," said President Trump in 2015. "And he knows my daughter very well. He has said good things about me. Extremely, extremely positive things."
Kanye West, who has expressed a desire to run for president, has unofficially endorsed Trump for a second term and has pledged not to run for president until at least 2024, in order to ensure that he does not take away any votes from President Trump.
But President Trump claims that Kanye West is supporting him not because he and the rapper have long been close friends. Rather, he claims that Kanye believes that the Republican Party has a better platform for black unemployment. According to Trump, low taxes and reducing regulations have proven to be an agenda that helps to reduce unemployment, especially for black Americans among whom unemployment rates are particularly high.
"Kanye looks and he sees black unemployment at the lowest it’s been in the history of our country, okay?"
Trump claims that other groups have seen a reduction in unemployment since he and the Republican Party took over in 2016.
"He sees Hispanic unemployment at the lowest it’s been in the history of our country. He sees, by the way, female unemployment, women unemployment, the lowest it’s been in now almost 19 years. He sees that stuff and he’s smart,” Trump said, attempting to explain the support."
Fox News reports that Chance the Rapper has chimed in on social media amid recent controversy over Kanye West's public approval of President Trump.
"Black people don't have to be Democrats," Chance tweeted, referring to West's recent comments.
