The NFL has been riddled with a major scandal that has seen fans turning away from the league in large numbers. Fans are upset and rightly so by seeing professional athletes, getting paid millions of dollars a year, refusing to stand for the national anthem.
The players claim that their kneeling is a form of protest against police brutality in this country. However, one can make the argument that the original protest has morphed into an anti-Trump protest as larger numbers of players joined in the kneeling when President Trump began calling them out.
The kneeling became so prevalent and such a hot button issue that the NFL has changed their policy surrounding the anthem. The new policy requires all players and personnel to stand for the national anthem or stay in the locker room while it is being played.
Even with the new changes to the NFL policy, President Trump took a bold action, forcing the entitled athletes to put their money where their mouth is. Prior to leaving for the G-7 summit, Trump made the players a generous offer they would be crazy to refuse.
“I am going to ask all of those people to recommend to me, because that’s what they’re protesting, people that they think were unfairly treated by the justice system,” Trump said.
“I’m going to ask them to recommend to me people that were unfairly treated. Friends of theirs or people they know about and I’m going to take a look at those applications,” Trump continued. “If I find, if my committee finds they’re unfairly treated, we will pardon them or at least let them out.”
One would imagine that the players would be lining up to submit names of people they believed were wronged by the justice system. However, that appears not to be the case at all.
President Trump appeared on Fox News and was asked specifically about the olive branch he extended to the athletes. “No, I haven’t hear from them,” Trump replied. “They’re all saying, ‘Oh it has nothing to do with the flag, it’s the way we’ve been treated.’ In the meantime, they’re making $15 million a year.”
If the players have reached out to the Trump administration, their please haven’t reached his ears. “Maybe they’ve called the staff but I’ve not personally heard from one, because I don’t know if it’s a real issue. I don’t think it’s a real issue.”
This raises the question, what do the players really want? If they believe that police brutality is rampant across the country and that millions of minorities are being unfairly treated by the justice system, then surely they can lobby President Trump on behalf of some of these individuals.
Whether you like Kim Kardashian or not, she has more guts than any NFL kneeler. She saw a particular case that she believed in and took action to secure Alice Johnson’s release from prison.
Do you agree with President Trump? Do you think the players ‘protest’ is genuine?
