The battle for late-term abortions is heating up in America in an unprecedented way. While more and more Americans are against abortion, Democrats are fervently urging states to adopt laws that strip unborn babies of any rights. In fact, every current Democrat planning to run in 2020 sponsored the Women's Health Protection Act, a bill that would make full-term abortions (like just passed in New York) nationwide.
“If you look at every Democrat in the Senate that is speculating or has announced that they are going to run for president [in 2020], every single one of them … have all co-sponsored this bill,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life lobbying organization Susan B. Anthony List.
Why the sudden push for gruesome abortion laws? Besides the spiritual aspect of being evilly motivated, many point to Democrats' fear that pro-life Trump will overturn Roe v. Wade through a conservative Supreme Court. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's health is on the line, and Trump would potentially be able to fill her spot with yet another conservative, much to the horror of Democrats.
So President Trump made a bold and purposeful move last week and invited both Melissa Ohden, who survived a saline solution abortion in 1977, and Micah Pickering, a 6-year-old child who was born in the 20th week of pregnancy but survived to the White House. He hosted a nationwide conference call urging pro-lifers to take a stand against Democrats' push to make late-term abortion federal law. (Late-term abortion literally allows for babies to be killed on their due-dates, fully formed and without question. In Virginia, a presented bill wants to go even further and allow babies to be killed during delivery or even after.)
So the stakes are high. They are high for the future of our nation, especially spiritually. God, in the Old Testament, gave Israel over to their enemies after they sacrificed their children in the fire to Molech. How is abortion different?
Thankfully President Trump and Vice President Pence are wholeheartedly pro-life. During his State of the Union address, Trump boldly said: “There could be no greater contrast to the beautiful image of a mother holding her infant child than the chilling displays our Nation saw in recent days. Lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother's womb moments before birth. These are living, feeling, beautiful babies who will never get the chance to share their love and dreams with the world. And then, we had the case of the Governor of Virginia where he basically stated he would execute a baby after birth.”
During his call last week, Trump urged supporters to stand behind the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. About 4,000 were on the national call, which insiders say Trump rarely does anymore.
“This is a call that he rarely does. He doesn’t do these conference calls very often,” Dannenfelser said. “But he is clearly taking advantage of an important moment in trying to get legislation looked at in the Senate and the House. He is demanding that this is brought to his desk so he could sign it.”
“The president is truly pro-life. There has been so much speculation since the primaries about whether his heart is true or not. I can say walking out of that Oval Office today that this is a deeply-held and sincere conviction,” Dannenfelser shared.
The abortion survivors bill would mandate that healthcare providers try to save infants born alive from botched abortions, instead of kill them alive as Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has advocated. It is an effort to push protections for the unborn, in hopes the ball would keep rolling and allow for further pro-life laws in the face of the war on the unborn led by the Democrats.
What do you think of this growing war on the unborn? What do you think is fueling it? Do you think Christians should support President Trump for a second term for the sake of the unborn? Share your thoughts and prayers in the comments! Thank you!
