President Trump responded to the uproar over Melania's jacket on Thursday. He fired back against those who said it meant Melania didn't care about the children of illegal immigrants.
First Lady Melania Trump visited the border because she wanted to see for herself what the situation was at the border rather than relying on the media. Her spokeswoman said she made the decision on her own.
However, the focus wasn't on Melania's visit to the border. The focus was on a jacket that she wore at the beginning of the trip.
As she departed the White House on Thursday morning, Melania wore a jacket that had "I REALLY DON'T CARE. DO U?" written on the back. The jacket reportedly costs $39 and came from the store Zara, reported CNBC.
Melania removed the jacket before landing in Texas. However, it still caused controversy.
President Trump responded to the controversy on his Twitter account. He fired back at critics of his wife, giving his own explanation of why Melania wore the controversial jacket.
He wrote, "'I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?' written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!"
The first lady's communications director Stephanie Grisham issued a response to the statement. She emphasized that Melania's fashion choices are not what is important about what she did today.
She wrote in a statement, "It's a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today's important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn't going to choose to focus on her wardrobe."
She also tweeted, "Today’s visit w the children in Texas impacted @flotus greatly. If media would spend their time & energy on her actions & efforts to help kids - rather than speculate & focus on her wardrobe - we could get so much accomplished on behalf of children. #SheCares #ItsJustAJacket."
