Over the last several weeks, NBA teams have been fighting for the top spot in the league. Now, with the ending in sight, President Trump has some harsh news for the team who will win. Either the Golden State Warriors or the Cleveland Cavaliers will win the 2018 NBA Finals, but neither of them will be invited to the White House after their win.
Game 4 will be played on Friday night. At this point, the Warriors are leading the series 3-0, so it is extremely likely that they will take home the championship, yet again. According to Forbes, there are 131 instances where a franchise lost the first three games in a row in the finals.
However, only 3 of those teams were able to take it all the way to Game 7. Because of that, chances are low that the Cavs could play their way back to the top.
Either way, President Trump has announced that neither of the teams will be invited to the White House this year after their win, a tradition that has been strong in the past. However, it is not too surprising that they will not receive an invitation, considering the history between the president and the team’s leading players.
On Friday morning leading up to the G-7 summit in Canada, President Trump talked about the situation.
He said, “I didn’t invite LeBron James and I didn’t invite Steph Curry. We’re not going to invite either team, but we have other teams that are coming.”
This statement comes after both James and Curry announced that if they were to receive an invitation, they would not visit the White House anyway. Though this is a tradition dating all the way back to the 1960s, they said that they would turn it down.
President Trump said, “My attitude [is] if they want to be here, the greatest place on earth, I’ll be here. If they don’t want to be here, I don’t want them.”
