On Monday, July 9, President Trump announced his pick for the Supreme Court justice who will replace Anthony Kennedy. This decision will influence the Supreme Court for decades to come.
While many thought he would choose former Notre Dame law professor Amy Coney Barrett, Trump announced his nomination of Brett Kavanaugh on Monday night.
When he made his nomination, he said he had "without doubt" found someone who will respect the Constitution.
He said, "I do not ask about a nominee's personal opinions. What matters is not a judge's political views, but whether they can set aside those views to do what the law and the Constitution require."
After the nomination, Kavanaugh spoke about his judicial philosophy.
He said, "My judicial philosophy is straightforward. A judge must be independent, and must interpret the law, not make the law."
Pro-life group Susan B. Anthony list supported President Trump nomination. They wrote on Twitter.
“President Trump has made another outstanding choice in nominating Judge Brett Kavanaugh to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, keeping his promise to nominate only originalist judges to the Court."
Former President George W. Bush, who nominated Kavanaugh to the federal appeals court, applauded the decision. He released a statement after the nomination.
He wrote, President Trump has made an outstanding decision in nominating Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court...He will make a superb Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States."
On the other hand, liberals like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are livid at the choice. They believe it puts at risk so-called "reproductive rights."
