On Tuesday morning, the tragic news broke that a Virginia State Trooper had been killed in the line of duty, reported local news.

Trooper Lucas B. Dowell, 28, was killed while serving a search warrant to a man's home in Farmville, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia State Police Tactical Team.

A man began shooting at officers attempting to enter the suspect's home using a search warrant for a narcotics investigation. Investigators say officers returned gunfire and killed the suspect.

Dowell was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. He is survived by his parents and sister.

According to Virginia State Police, Dowell is the department's 66th trooper killed in the line of duty.

The NYPD Chief of Department tweeted after Dowell's death asking people to "never forget." He remembered the remarkable man.

Other police departments also joined them in their mourning.

Dowell graduated the Virginia State Police’s 122nd Basic Session in November 2014, said the police department release. Since that graduation, he's worked for the Virginia State Police in their Appomattox Division.

“This is an extremely difficult day for the State Police,” said Colonel Gary T. Settle, Virginia State Police Superintendent. “We are humbled by Lucas’ selfless sacrifice and grateful for his dedicated service to the Commonwealth. He will forever be remembered by his State Police Family for his great strength of character, tenacity, valor, loyalty and sense of humor.”

No other troopers were injured in the shooting. In accordance with Virginia State Police policy, the two troopers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave.

Please join us in praying for Dowell's parents, sister, and friends. This is a terrible loss for the community. May God give them comfort and peace.
