Prayers Needed: Massive 6.1 Earthquake Rocks Major Area, 'Knocking Over Buildings'

April 22, 2019Apr 22, 2019

A massive earthquake has just been reported. Early reports suggested it was around a 5.0 magnitude event. However, it has now been upgraded to a 6.1 magnitude earthquake.

"A strong earthquake in the north Philippines on Monday trapped some people in a collapsed building, damaged an airport terminal and knocked out power in at least one province, officials said," according to the LA Times.

Rescue crews are currently on the scene in the area. Many people are said to still be unaccounted for in the destruction. Some are trapped by the debris.

At this time, the number of injured has not been reported. Multiple people are said to have already been confirmed dead. As officials work to search through the rubble the number is expected to rise.

"The Philippines, one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries, has frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because of its location on the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a seismically active arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. A magnitude-7.7 quake killed nearly 2,000 people in the northern Philippines in 1990," reported the LA Times.

Infrastructure in the region is said to have been badly damaged. Many bridges, buildings, and highways suffered tremendously. The airports are currently not operational as well due to damage.

Please join us in praying for everyone in the area. We especially pray for those who were injured by the event or who lost loved ones in the disaster.
