Popular Blood Pressure Medication Recalled Over Impurity, Check Your Bottles

A new recall was recently announced for a popular blood pressure medication. Losartan has announced they are recalling new lots of their drug for fear it may have cancer-related links.

"Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. has initiated a voluntary recall in the United States of 35 lots of bulk Losartan Potassium USP Tablets. This recall is due to the detection of a cancer-causing impurity – N-Nitroso-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid (NMBA)," wrote Fox.

According to reports, the drug was sold exclusively to a California based medical supply company. The bulk product was sold under their own label and distributed in bottles of 30, 90, and 1000 tablets.

At this time, the recall is a preemptive action to stop customers from having adverse effects. There have not been any cancer-related incidents reported at this time. The pills were sold exclusively to Golden State Medical Supply of Camarillo, California, according to Fox News.

Now, another update is coming in. Another recall is being announced in connection with Losartan, says the FDA. 19 lots are said to be impacted.

"Losartan Potassium Tablets USP in 25, 50 and 100 mgs are being recalled for a higher presence of N-Nitroso-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid (NMBA) than the FDA allows," reported WTOP.

Cancer is said to be possibly linked to long-term exposure to high levels of NMBA. Customers taking the meds are asked to immediately contact their doctors.

"Losartan is used to treat 'hypertension, hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy, nephropathy in Type 2 diabetic patients.' The medication is manufactured by Vivimed in India and distributed nationwide by Heritage Pharmaceuticals, a company based in East Brunswick, New Jersey," according to reports.
