While visiting Mexico on Thursday, Pope Francis interjected himself into American politics and the upcoming presidential election. According to Fox News, the Pope was asked his opinion on Trump’s promise to build a border wall between Mexico and the United States.
“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the Gospel,” the Pope said.
The Pope admitted that he didn’t know the details of Trump’s plan to secure the border and said he’d “give him the benefit of the doubt.” Despite not knowing the much about Trump’s border wall, Pope Francis said “I’d just say that this man is not Christian if he said it this way.”
The comments from the man in charge of over a billion Catholics worldwide took the presidential frontrunner by surprise. Shortly after the Pope’s comments, Trump issued his own response in the way that only Trump can.
“For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful,” Trump said. “The Pope only heard one side of the story and he didn’t see the crime, the drug trafficking and the negative economic impact the current policies have on the United
States. He doesn’t see how Mexican leadership is outsmarting President Obama and our leadership in every aspect of negotiation.”
Trump then ramped up his rhetoric. “They are using the Pope as a pawn, “ Trump said. “And they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant.”
In a shot taken at the massive wall surrounding the Vatican, Trump said “if and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president because this would not have happened.”
