On Tuesday, February 5, President Trump delivered his second State of the Union Address. There was a lot of controversy leading up to the speech, as the date of it had been debated back-and-forth for weeks.
The SOTU was originally scheduled for the end of January, but Speaker Pelosi asked that it be changed due to the ongoing government shutdown. Eventually, President Trump and Speaker Pelosi opted to switch the date to February 5.
Now, the mainstream media has provided polls regarding the event. The purpose of the polls was to show how effective President Trump's speech was and to talk about the approval rating of it.
To many Democratic leaders' dismay, President Trump's speech had an overwhelming approval rating. According to mainstream networks, three out of four viewers approved of the speech.
According to Daily Wire, the main polls were conducted by CNN and CBS News. They reported that CNN Political Director David Chalian revealed that 76% of viewers of the SOTU speech approved of it. However, both CNN and CBS noted that more Republicans watched the speech than Democrats.
Chalian said, "So I just want to stress here for a State of the Union address, the president's partisans, his supporters tend to turn out to watch the speech. This is true of a president of either party. Tonight we saw a heavily skewed Republican audience turn out to watch the president's speech."
Chalian continued, "But look at this. A very positive reaction from those who watched the speech tonight. 59% very positive. 17% somewhat positive. 23% negative. I want you to see that very positive number, how that compares to Donald Trump's performances in the last couple of years when he has given a speech to a joint session of Congress like this."
He continued, "You'll see that he was again at 59%. He was down at 48% very positive a year ago. Back when he first started the job and he addressed the Congress, he was at 57%. So he is back up...This is a speech-watching audience that was more receptive this year than last year what they saw."
CBS News had similar results to their survey. They interviewed 1,472 viewers and revealed that 76% of the viewers approved the speech, while 24% disapproved. They noted that 97% of Republicans approved of the speech, while 30% of Democrats and 82% of Independents approved.
Beyond the overall speech, viewers "overwhelmingly agreed" with the biggest agenda items, including the need to reform immigration, the border crisis, and troops in the Middle East.
