Police Warn Citizens About Scary New ‘Jury Duty’ Scam Going Around

Scams and fake calls are two of the most common ways thieves steal money from unsuspecting victims. Police are now warning people about a new scam.

“Callers posing as members of the sheriff’s office through an audio clip are telling residents they need to resolve matters related to missed court appearances and jury duty, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said,” according to reports.

Scammers tell victims that they must pay huge sums of money to avoid being in trouble. Since they claim to be police officers, the scammers have entrapped many people.

Law enforcement is on the scene. They have spoken out about this scam and warned citizens that they will never call them with such sensitive information.

“Nationwide, these scammers are attempting to use the criminal justice system and the threat of arrest as a tool to frighten people into paying large sums of money,” said Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian. “We want residents to be aware of these scams and these tactics in order to better protect themselves.”

You should hang up if you get one of these calls. If you believe you or someone you know has been victim to this scam, you can also reach out to officials.
