Police are on the lookout for a 2-year-old toddler who they believe was snatched by a couple and may be in a van traveling across the country.
According to FOX 57, William Eugene Ray, 43, and Jessica Louise Ray, 36, do not have legal custody of their child Dakota Ray. Because of their history of meth use, Dakota was taken away from her parents and was recently given to William’s brother instead.
However, police in Camden, South Carolina say William convinced his brother to meet him with the toddler on Sunday. William reportedly told his brother that he had passed a drug test and that the Department of Social Services was letting him have his child back.
When William’s brother left to get some food, William allegedly took off with Dakota, WISTV reported. He is suspected of stealing the vehicle he is fleeing in and its license plate.
Police are asking the public to keep an eye out for a beige 1996 Ford Aerostar van. According to FOX 57, the van is displaying South Carolina license plate LMU173.
Someone spotted William, Jessica, and their van Tuesday morning at a gas station somewhere in North Carolina, according to the Camden Police. William was caught on surveillance camera inside the gas station, and a tipster photographed his van.
According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, William is white. He is 6 feet, 1 inches tall and weighs 340 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. No description has been provided for Jessica, but in her mugshot she appears to be white and has long blonde and brown hair.
Oddly enough, Dakota’s gender has been reported as male and as female in the same alerts. He or she is white and has blonde hair and blue eyes. He or she is 2 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 25 pounds.
