On late Tuesday night, a tragedy took place in Alabama. A police officer, Justin Billa, was shot and killed in an incident that caused two other deaths as well.
According to Fox News, police were sent to an Alabama home after a woman was found dead in the middle of the street. Police immediately identified the woman’s ex-husband, Robert Hollie, as the suspect.
When officers arrived at the home Hollie was at, he had barricaded himself in. Reportedly, while the officers were establishing their grounds outside of the home, Officer Billa was shot and killed.
The standoff lasted for around two hours until eventually, the suspect died. It is still unclear if he killed himself or if an officer shot him.
Though the situation is over, the officer’s family and coworkers are now living with a deep sadness over their loss. Officer Billa was loved by many and was named “Police Officer of the Month” in June 2016.
MPD Chief Lawrence Battiste said that Billa had “great attention to detail skills and shows commitment daily to providing a professional level of law enforcement service to the city of Mobile.”
After several police officers were gathered together outside of South Alabama Medical Center before Billa’s death was announced, Councilman Fred Richard opened up about how the loss would affect the community.
He said, “I am concerned about the officer’s family, and I’m concerned about the rest of the officers who on a daily basis put their lives on the lines for the city.”
Billa is survived by his wife and young son. In a recent interview, he shared that he always has a “moment with his wife” before work. He said that they remind each other every day of how much they love each other.
Please be praying for Billa’s wife, son, other family members, and coworkers. Please also pray for the family of the woman who was killed as well. Share your prayers here.
