Soccer is one of the most popular sports on the planet. Thousands of people play the game on a daily basis and some arenas are packed full of spectators simply watching the athletes.
One of the most important jobs on the field is that of the referee. Sadly, a young referee just passed away during a Bolivian league match.
"The match between the Always Ready and Oriente Petrolero clubs was played at Municipal Stadium in El Alto, which sits about 12,795 feet above sea level. The game was at the 47th minute when referee Victor Hugo Hurtado toppled backward and fell off the field. Players and team doctors rushed to his side and after a few minutes Hurtado was put in an ambulance and driven away," reported Fox.
The young man was only 31-years-old. He later died at the hospital once he was transported there.
"Always Ready team doctor Eric Kosziner told reporters later that the referee suffered a heart attack on the field and then a second, fatal attack as he arrived at the hospital," wrote Fox.
Please join us in praying for his friends and family during this sad time. We pray they find comfort through our Lord.
