On Wednesday, July 18, many people became outraged over a show that is scheduled to come to Netflix. The show, “American Jesus,” is about a 12-year-old boy who finds out that he is Jesus.

Below is the description of the show:

“‘American Jesus’ follows a 12-year-old boy who suddenly discovers he’s returned as Jesus Christ. He can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! How will he deal with the destiny to lead the world in a conflict thousands of years in the making?”

They continued, “Everado Gout (‘Marvel’s Luke Cage,’ ‘Sacred Lies,’ ‘Mars,’ ‘Banshee’) and Leopoldo Gout (‘Molly’s Game,’ ‘Instinct’) will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers on the series. Everado Gout will also direct.”

According to IMDB, “American Jesus” will be an “exploration of Christianity in every faction of American life, from the bread line to the yoga studio, from the humble churches of snake handlers to the mega churches of the ex-urbs.”

It continued, “Populated by an array of religious and secular characters offering candid, often illuminating testimonials, American Jesus is a vivid mosaic of personalities and conflicting points of view that emerges as a portrait of an America yearning for solace and meaning in the modern world.”

The show was written by Mark Millar, a comic book creator. Last August, Netflix reportedly announced it would be purchasing the “Millarworld empire.”

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said, “As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history…Mark is as close as you can get to a modern-day Stan Lee.  We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling.”

Though Netflix is confident that the show will bring in a lot of revenue, many fans are outraged over the content.

Several people took to Twitter to bash the show’s concept, saying that it is heretical and a “theologically illiterate mess.”

Many people are particularly upset because the show is alleged to have the young-Jesus side with extremely liberal issues. Some are fearful that the show will not only portray Jesus wrong but also use the show to promote agendas. Others are upset because it promotes the idea of reincarnation, something that isn't even a Christian belief.
