Getting engaged is one of the most exciting days for a couple. Recently, engagements seem to be getting more elaborate and thought out, with many of them getting filmed and shared online.
For Darío Ramírez and his fiance, Maryangel Espinal, their engagement is one that will top the charts for being unique and meaningful. It will forever be marked by having Pope Francis personally involved in their momentous day. After Ramírez and Espinal had met in church a year and a half ago, getting engaged in a religious setting was the perfect next step.
The couple was traveling as part of a delegation of Catholic legislators, which is why they were visiting the Vatican. After Ramirez spent time talking with the Pope about Venezuela and the political and economic upheaval, he turned the topic of conversation to something more personal.
Right in front of Pope Francis, Ramírez got down on one knee and asked Espinal to become his wife. “She thought we were just going to talk about Venezuela,” Ramírez said to the National Catholic Register. “But I then said to the pope: ‘There’s a third thing I want to ask you.’”
“I explained to the Holy Father that the woman next to me is the woman of my life,” he said. “I met her in church, that God put her in my life, and I want to propose to her. So I got down on one knee and asked.”
Espinal was understandably in shock and during her silence, Pope Francis said, “She’s not speaking — he asked you to marry him, what do you say?” To which she said, “Yes, of course.”
Cheers from other delegates watching could be heard after she accepted. Following the excitement also came a welcomed blessing from the Pope. Watch the video below to see the exciting proposal.
