Pentagon Makes 1st-Time-Ever Announcement Regarding ‘Transgender’ Soldier

On Tuesday, the Pentagon announced it had just done something for the first time ever — it had paid for the sex-reassignment surgery of an active-duty soldier.

According to NBC News, the Pentagon said in a statement, "This afternoon, an active-duty military member received a sex-reassignment surgery. Military hospitals do not have the surgical expertise to perform this type of surgery, therefore it was conducted in a private hospital.”

The surgery was signed off on by the Defense Health Agency’s Vice Admiral Raquel Bono. The soldier identifies as a woman and, according to an NBC source, served in Afghanistan in 2003. The Pentagon gave a special reason for approving the taxpayer-funded surgery.

"Because this service member had already begun a sex-reassignment course of treatment, and the treating doctor deemed this surgery medically necessary, a waiver was approved by the director of the Defense Health Agency,” the Pentagon said. “The Supplemental Health Care Program will cover this surgery in accordance with the Department's interim guidance on transgender Service members."

Using taxpayer money to fund these types of surgeries has been a major controversy and one that caught the attention of President Trump earlier this year. According to American Military News, Trump called for a ban on funding these surgeries in the military, a ban on accepting new “transgender” recruits, and what appeared to be a ban on active-duty “transgender” troops from continuing to serve as well.

Trump’s Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, though, pushed the pause button on Trump’s triple ban and said he wanted to hear advice from experts first before implementing it, according to the Washington Post.

Mattis explained at the time, “Our focus must always be on what is best for the military’s combat effectiveness leading to victory on the battlefield. To that end, I will establish a panel of experts serving within the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to provide advice and recommendations on the implementation of the president’s direction.”
