Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro introduced Tuesday that he’ll implement “computerized voter registration” forward of the 2024 election.
The governor rolled out his plan on Nationwide Voter Registration Day to “streamline” the voter-registration course of, which he argues will “save taxpayers money and time,” according to an announcement video. Shapiro’s plan will robotically enroll Pennsylvanians within the voting system, until the person opts out, when receiving an identification card or driver’s license on the Division of Motor Automobiles.
“To any extent further, while you get or renew your driver’s license or an ID card on the DMV, you’ll be registered to vote until you select to not,” Shapiro stated within the video. “I made a dedication once I was campaigning for this workplace that we’d carry computerized voter registration in Pennsylvania and break down the boundaries for authorized, eligible voters. It is a key step to make our elections safer, including vital ranges of verification to the voter registration course of.”
