For the last 26 days, the government has been in a shutdown over looming border security questions. While on his campaign trail, President Trump promised to put a wall between the U.S./Mexico border. Now, he is attempting to make good on that promise.

Government shutdowns occur when Democratic and Republican leaders fail to reach a budget decision. Now, they are in the longest shutdown in U.S. history over decisions about the border wall.

On Wednesday, January 16, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made an interesting request of President Trump in the midst of the government shutdown. She suggested that President Trump postpone his State of the Union address, set for January 29.

In her letter, Pelosi also gave President Trump the option of submitting his State of the Union Address in writing, something that past presidents had done.

Pelosi noted that the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security are expected to serve at the SOTU, but that neither camps have been paid for 26 days.

Pelosi wrote, "Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th."

Following the release of her letter, thousands took to social media to share their opinions on the matter. Some were for Pelosi's request, saying that the security officials need to be paid to serve at that level. Others disagreed with Pelosi, saying that she is just trying to get President Trump to postpone his address because she doesn't want the media attention surrounding the shutdown. Below are some of the posts:
