On Sunday, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was unable to attend the postgame news conference due to a "family emergency." News outlets are now learning the heartbreaking reason behind his absence.
Just before kickoff for Sunday's game, Mahomes girlfriend's stepfather, Paul Matthews, collapsed outside Arrowhead Stadium. He later died after being transported to a local hospital.
After the tragedy took place, Mahomes girlfriend, Brittany Matthews, took to her social media to share a heartfelt tribute to her stepdad.
“Today is a day I will never forget! Directly after this picture I sprinted to the front entrance to see my step dad passed out! He did not come back from this and he was called to heaven today!” Matthews wrote on Instagram.
“I KNOW 100% he is so happy up there with his kids looking down on us cheering loud that his chiefs won today! Thank you everyone for the prayers and sweet text! We will miss you Paul So So So Much! I will take care of mom for you,” she continued.
According to the Washington Post, "Coach Andy Reid said that Mahomes had skipped the interview session because of a “family emergency” and Mahomes, who set a Chiefs single-season record with his 31st touchdown pass in the team’s 26-14 victory over Arizona, has not commented."
Our hearts go out to Matthews' loved ones during this difficult time. Please share your prayers in the comments section on our Facebook page. Also, be sure and check out our other recent news story about America's sweetheart announcing her engagement!
