Hillary Clinton’s pastor, Rev. Bill Shillady, released a devotional titled, “Strong for a Moment Like This: The Daily Devotions of Hillary Rodham Clinton,” in August 2017. The book includes 365 daily devotions that Clinton received personally from a team of pastors during her time as the Democratic nominee in the 2016 presidential election.
This book was a part of major headlines earlier this year when it was discovered that Clinton expressed interest in becoming a preacher, following these personal devotions. Although liberals expected the book to be a great success, there was one major problem.
According to Fox News, the publisher found traces of plagiarism throughout the book, forcing them to pull the newly released book from all shelves and “destroy” any remaining copies. Abingdon Press, the publisher, released the following statement:
"Abingdon Press has zero tolerance for plagiarism. Consequently, we have discontinued sales, will remove existing copies from all sales outlets, and will have them destroyed along with our existing inventory."
This news comes shortly after plagiarism was discovered in the private email Clinton’s pastor sent her the day after the 2016 election, which was included in the series of devotions. The email was meant to be an encouraging word, comparing her time of trouble to Jesus’s resurrection from Good Friday to Easter Sunday— the election loss was her “Friday,” but her “Sunday” was coming.
However, the email was very similar to a blog post by an Indiana Reverend, reported Faithwire. Shillady apologized, claiming he had no idea regarding the similarities; therefore, during an extensive book review, the publisher was “alarmed to discover other content unattributed by the author.”
Shillady released a separate apologetic statement regarding the devotional, “I was wrong and there is no excuse for it. I apologize to those I have disappointed, including Secretary Hillary Clinton, Abingdon Press, and all the writers and others who have helped me publish and promote this book. I ask for everyone’s forgiveness.”
