Some absolutely amazing news was reported over the weekend that has Christians all over the nation rejoicing. Pastor Andrew Brunson, an American who was sentenced to prison in Turkey, was officially released from his 24-month detention. The Turkish court made the announcement on Friday.
According to the New York Times, Brunson had been accused of spying and aiding terrorists. His initial sentence was for 3 years, 1 month, and 15 days. However, his sentence was just cut short and he was allowed to return to the United States.
Both President Trump and Vice President Pence had spoken to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan several times about the matter. Additionally, some members of Congress went to Turkey to attend Brunson’s trial.
According to reports, the pastor’s detention was ultimately an attempt by Ankara to gain leverage in their disagreements with Washington D.C.
Now, Americans are rejoicing for Brunson’s safe return. According to BBC, Brunson arrived safely back on U.S. soil. On Saturday afternoon, President Trump will meet with him in the Oval Office.
President Trump wrote, “Pastor Andrew Brunson, released by Turkey, will be with me in the Oval Office at 2:30 p.m. (this afternoon). It will be wonderful to see and meet him. He is a great Christian who has been through such a tough experience. I would like to thank President @RT_Erdogan for his help!”
Pastor Brunson said, “This is the day our family has been praying for, I am delighted to be on my way home. My entire family thanks the president, the administration, and Congress for their unwavering support.”
