About two months ago in Alabama, a 13-year-old boy was riding in a small cart behind a buggy when something terrible happened. His friend driving the buggy suddenly slammed on the brakes, causing the trailer to flip.
According to People, Trenton McKinley, who was riding in the cart, landed on his head.
“I hit the concrete and the trailer landed on top of my head,” McKinley recalled, speaking to Fox 10. “After that, I don’t remember anything.”
What happened next was that he was pronounced dead – at least for 15 minutes, said his mom, Jennifer Reindl. As Trenton was rushed to USA Medical Center in Mobile, Reindl painted a grisly scene, remembering her son in that condition.
“All I saw was a stretcher with his feet hanging out. He was dead a total of 15 minutes,” she said as doctors approached her, preparing her for the worst.
“When he came back, they said he would never be normal again,” she continued. “They told me the oxidation problems would be so bad to his brain, that he would be a vegetable if he even made it.”
So, after days of an unchanging state, in which Trenton remained brain dead, Jennifer and her husband made the difficult choice to sign the papers that would donate his organs to five children who were in need of care, who were a right match for Trenton.
“They said the next time his heart stopped they had to let him die….this was a [Saturday]….or I could sign a paper to donate his organs to save five other kids….and they would keep hitting him with adrenaline till monday….so I signed it,” Reindl wrote on Facebook. “His eyes were solid black and dry and I knew he would not hesitate to save 5 more lives.”
But then nothing short of a miracle occurred. Trenton began to show signs of life. The next day, Reindl got a call from the doctors saying his hand had moved, then his foot.
“So they looked at his eyes and they were back…he had blue eyes…now they are green with small white specks like glitter….my baby was in heaven for a whole day…he is a miracle,” Reindl wrote.
Trenton still suffers from nerve pain and seizures every day, but he’s recovering, maintaining a positive attitude. He told Fox 10 that he believes he was in heaven while unconscious.
“I was in an open field walking straight,” he said. “There’s no other explanation but God. There’s no other way. Even doctors said it.”
