‘Our job is to provide ethical and moral guidance’: Should Bishops remain in the House of Lords?

The 26 Bishops who sit in the House of Lords today or ‘The Lords Spiritual’ date back to the 14th century. Their place in parliament has been a source of controversy and debate.

Although the bishops claim that their role in providing ethical advice is crucial, many people argue that the practice of tying religion and policymaking together is not right and is outdated.

We spoke with Rt Revd Paul Butler (Bishop of Durham) and Andrew Copson of Humanists UK in order to find out why they think the bishops should be kept in the House of Lords.
