One of the most iconic writers and poets of modern-day America has just passed away. W.S. Merwin has died at the age of 91.

"One of America's most respected and enduring poets, W.S. Merwin, has died. Merwin's poetry is known for its mystery and wonder, and he was twice named the U.S. poet laureate. He also won a National Book Award and two Pulitzer Prizes," reported NPR.

Merwin passed away at his home in Hawaii. His publisher announced his death.

"Merwin wrote a lot and for a long time. As a 5-year-old in New Jersey, he wrote hymns for the Presbyterian church where his father was a minister. When he was ready for college, the young Merwin earned a scholarship to Princeton, where he also worked in the campus dining halls. He went on to Europe, where he became a translator and soon a poet," according to NPR.

Later in his career, Merwin became increasingly interested in conservation issues. His poems reflected his passions. He often wrote about the planet, nuclear issues, and wars.

His passion for the environment and conservation ultimately brought him to Hawaii. Alongside his wife, Merwin worked to restore an old pineapple plantation and the surrounding rainforest. Now, his home is being made into the Merwin Conservancy.

Social media was filled with people mourning his loss and expressing their tributes. Join us in praying for his family during this difficult time.
