O.J. Simpson, 70-year-old former NFL running back, has become a very well-known name following his professional football career and the infamous murder trial in 1995. Simpson was previously accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her good friend Ron Goldman. He was found not guilty on both counts of murder, although many, to this day, still have reason to believe he actually committed the crime.
However, in 2007, he was arrested in Las Vegas after being involved in a kidnapping and armed robbery. He was reportedly attempting to retrieve some of his property, including sports memorabilia, but was sentenced 9 to 33 years in prison under the charges in 2008.
In July of 2017, the former football star was granted parole during a public court hearing that received a massive amount of media attention, much like the 1995 murder trial. After spending 9 years in prison, Simpson was officially released on Sunday evening, October 1st.
He was hoping to reside in Florida with his family immediately after his release, but unfortunately, that won’t happen. Prior to his release, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a detailed letter to the state’s Department of Corrections, requesting that Simpson not be allowed to relocate to the Sunshine State, though a decision has not been finalized.
Bondi asked that Nevada authorities be “immediately notified” of Florida’s objection to Simpson moving to Florida. In the letter, she expressed her concerns about his lack of remorse for his crimes, his conviction of spousal battery of Nicole Simpson, continuous destructive behavior that has been dramatically publicized, and his presence potentially becoming a burden to local law enforcement.
Although he decided to not go to Florida right away due to hurricane troubles, he reportedly plans to move there soon to be with his children, as long as the state accepts the request, which his lawyer says is very possible. In the meantime, Simpson remains in Las Vegas with friends, reported the New York Post.
Since he currently resides in Nevada, he was actually near the scene of the Las Vegas massacre, where at least 58 people were shot and killed and over 515 were injured at a country music festival late Sunday night. Simpson’s reaction was, “What the heck is going on?” at the words of his attorney.
While the ex-running back is out of prison, he is still on parole. According to CNN, conditions of his parole include no drugs, no alcohol in large amounts, no association with convicted felons, and no possession of a firearm.
Violation of his parole terms could easily land him back in prison.
In the beginning stages of his release, he plans to lay low and visit family members. The New York Post also revealed that Simpson "really loves sleeping in a big real bed."
