In Indiana on Friday a 14-year-old teenager was playing basketball with his younger sister at an indoor court in the South Bend suburb of Granger. Then, tragedy struck.
Nolan Gerwels was under the hoop when the rim, backboard and supporting bracket came out of the wall and fell on him, according to Fox News.
Police said that he suffered apparent head injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Please pray for his family during this difficult time.
St. Joseph County police are investigating the incident, noting the unlikelihood of this freak accident. Police Assistant Chief Bill Thompson spoke to the IndyStar.
“Obviously this is an extremely unusual event, so we’re doing a little bit of investigation in terms of just exactly how the goal and the support bracket for it was anchored to the wall,” he said.
His mother, Margaret Gerwels, spoke in memory of her son, noting how difficult it has been to adjust to their loss.
"This is horrific and overwhelming," Gerwels said. "We are a close family, so everyone bears this heavy weight of his absence. He was so, so loved by everyone."
Gerwels said that her son was an honor student at middle school. He loved sports and had hoped to make the freshman basketball team at Marian High School in Mishawaka.
Please pray for the family during this tragic time, that God will use this to bring comfort and healing in time. Be sure to read about the Supreme Court decision that upheld President Trump’s travel ban.
